Shooting at Howe Park Results in 4 People Shot in the Arden-Arcade Area of Sacramento
Sacramento County deputies are working a violent incident that unfolded on the evening of April 18 at Howe Community Park in the Arden-Arcade area at the time law enforcement were shutting down an unlawful assembly of multiple hundreds of people.
What Led to the Shooting
Deputies initially responded to Howe Park shortly before 6:30 in the evening after receiving reports of individuals possibly carrying concealed weapons. Shortly after, another report was received concerning a possible physical fight breaking out inside the park.
A sheriff's airship flew over the park but found nothing to substantiate the fight report. Regardless, it was evident that hundreds of people had come together at the location without authorization.
The Moment Gunfire Erupted
Law enforcement personnel worked to disperse the crowd by surrounding the park and issuing commands over loudspeakers telling the assembled crowd to disperse at once. Approximately 15 minutes were allotted for the gathering to break up.
While deputies worked to disperse the gathering that 20 to 25 gunshots cut through the air. The shots caused mass panic. Law enforcement wasted no time in looking for those injured.
Those Who Were Hit
In total, four gunshot victims were confirmed as gunshot victims. The shooting victims — a group of one female and three male victims each reported to be in their twenties — were brought to nearby hospitals. Doctors and nurses indicated that two had critical injury classifications, one victim's injuries were classified as moderate, and one suffered minor injuries. According to authorities, all four victims survived and were stable.
The Sacramento Metropolitan Fire Department provided support and helped care for those who had been shot prior to hospital transport.
Crime Scene Evidence
Most of the gunfire was confirmed to have been concentrated near the Cottage Way side of the park close to the local Home Depot on the 2200 block here of Howe Avenue. Crime scene investigators recovered additional spent rounds along Cottage Way. Bullet damage were identified in the metal fencing surrounding the Home Depot. This evidence confirmed that at least one of the shooters had been discharging rounds toward the south from the Cottage Way area targeting the Home Depot store. That Home Depot location was secured under a brief lockdown while law enforcement worked the area. CSI units alongside detectives worked tirelessly late into the evening.
